Mining
Mining techniques have dramatically transformed over many years, with technological advances improving efficiency and safety. In the discovery stage of mineral exploration, mining engineers work closely with geologists to identify minerals and assess reserve quantities. Mineral engineers may then drill core samples and conduct surface surveys, searching for specific compounds and ores. Unless the mineral exploration is done on public lands, the property owners may play a significant role in mining exploration.
Generally, mining is either done from the surface or underground. Surface mining requires the stripping of surface vegetation, dirt, and if necessary, layers of bedrock in order to reach buried ore deposits. Additionally, explosives may be called for in order to facilitate breakage. Hard minerals such as limestone, sand, gravel, and slate are generally quarried into a series of benches. Strip mining, on the other hand, is more appropriate for softer minerals such as clays and phosphate. In-situ mining can be done from the surface using dissolving agents, retrieving the ore via pumps. Finally, hydraulic jets may be utilized to wash away the overburden or to clear out the ore itself.

Financial Aid Information
Government scholarships and Pell grant applications, combined with academic scholarships, only account for a third of total college aid. Student loans, work-study earnings, and personal savings make up the remaining two-thirds. The official FAFSA website is www.fafsa.ed.gov and is free to use. Many parents make mistakes when filling out the FAFSA information, including leaving some fields blank, spelling names wrong, and not entering social security numbers completely. Academic scholarships are highly competitive, and are usually awarded either by the admissions office, or individual academic departments.
Loan programs generally issue loans based on the credit history of the applicant and any co-signer. This is in contrast to federal loan programs that focus on need-based criteria. Financial aid may be administered via the Department of Education or through your school's financial aid office. High school grades are the most important factor in gaining admission to the college of your choice, along with letters of recommendation. According to Madisonville Community College access program, an ideal academic record consists of a high GPA in courses of progressive difficulty. Peterson's scholarship search is good to check not only for college scholarships, but also for the extensive resources on the college application process. Some scholarships have a bond requirement. Recipients may be required to work for a specified period of time or to work in rural or remote areas.
